Teachers’ Pension Contribution Changes 2027: Consultation Guide

The Department for Education is consulting on proposed changes to Teachers’ Pension Scheme member contribution rates from 1 April 2027. These are proposals, not current rules: the calculator and all 2026/27 figures on this site continue to use the rates currently in force.

Reviewed 19 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • The consultation opened on 7 August 2026 and closes at 11:59pm on 30 October 2026.
  • The DfE proposes keeping the lowest tier at 7.4% and reducing the other five member rates by 0.2 percentage points from 1 April 2027.
  • The proposals apply to the England and Wales Teachers’ Pension Scheme, subject to the regulations being finalised.
  • They do not change the 2026/27 calculator outputs or current contribution tiers.

What is being proposed

The DfE says the latest scheme valuation found that retaining the current member structure would collect more than the required aggregate 9.6% member contribution yield. It is consulting on a revised six-tier structure proposed to run from 1 April 2027 to 31 March 2029.

What remains current today

For 2026/27, member contributions remain on the current published tiers. Nothing in this consultation changes a current payslip, the figures in the teacher pay calculator or an existing entitlement. We will only update current-year calculator data when final, authoritative rules are published with an effective date.

Other consultation topics

The consultation also proposes amendments concerning Bereaved Partner’s Paternity Leave, automatic re-enrolment for people already active in another qualifying pension scheme, ill-health pensions and short-term survivor pensions. These are technical regulatory proposals; read the consultation document for the precise wording and scope.

Dates and next steps

The consultation opened on 7 August 2026 and closes at 11:59pm on 30 October 2026. The DfE says it will consider responses, publish a response document and expects final regulations to be in force by spring 2027. That timetable is not the same as a confirmed rule change.

How to use this information

  • Use the current teacher pay calculator for 2026/27 take-home estimates.
  • Treat the table above as a consultation scenario only, not a payroll instruction.
  • If you want to respond, use the official DfE consultation portal before the deadline.
